Engelberg’s Lesser Known Contributions towards Sustainable Tourism, Conservation and Mountain Safety
Engelberg is home to a diverse range of wildlife species that are adapted to living in mountainous terrain. Some of these species, such as the alpine ibex, are considered to be common, while others, such as the golden eagles are more rare and are considered to be indicators of the health of the local Alpine ecosystem.
Though Engelberg is not known as a scientific research hub, there are several research institutions and projects that have taken place in and/or around the town. Engelberg’s geographic location within the Swiss Alps has made it a good location for snow and avalanche research. The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) has a research station in the nearby valley to study snow and avalanches and improve safety in mountain regions. The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) also has a glaciological research station near the Titlis Glacier that allows scientists to study glacier dynamics and the impacts of climate change on high-altitude environments.
But equally important is Engelberg’s importance as a tourism destination, thus opening the doors for several research projects that have focused on measuring the impacts of tourism on the local environment and economy, as well as strategies for sustainable tourism development.
