One prime example is the Swiss Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Network that conducts research on the long-term dynamics of ecological systems within Switzerland. The LTER site in Gruyeres is focused on studying the impact of land-use changes and climate variability on alpine ecosystems e.g. the biodiversity of plant and animal communities within the region. Also, the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) has conducted research on forest ecosystems in the Gruyeres region e.g. studies on forest structure and composition, forest management practices, as well as the impact of climate change on forest dynamics.
In addition, there are ongoing research projects in the field of agriculture that focus on sustainable farming practices and the use of traditional farming methods to maintain biodiversity and protect the environment.
