Gruyeres Switzerland offers a true treat for the senses, our Gruyeres cheese and Swiss chocolate escapade lifts the curtain on the backstage world of cheese and chocolate production in Switzerland. Our Swiss adventure begins in the medieval village of Gruyeres, famed for the nutty and semi-hard cheese which shares its name “Gruyeres cheese”. Discover ramshackle 15th-century homes, meandering cobblestone alleys, and one of Switzerland’s crowning glory – the magnificent Castle of Gruyeres. Treat your tastebuds at a local dairy and where highly-skilled cheesemakers will teach us how to make Gruyeres. Sample the iconic Gruyeres cheese fresh from the wheel and discover the rich history behind the recipe. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a visit to the legendary Cailler Factory, the birthplace of Swiss chocolate!
Gruyeres Switzerland is famed for its Swiss Alpine Castle, Swiss Fondue cheese, and yes… Swiss chocolate! When planning a trip to Gruyeres Switzerland, one must take all that into consideration. Gruyeres Castle was erected in the 13th century, and onsite, there is a wonderful multimedia show and exhibits that take you through time. Gruyeres Castle is a pristine historical site with its Knights’ Hall, turrets, battlements, defensive walls and garden where nobles would walk the grounds.
According to legend, Gruyeres was founded in 400 B.C. by the Vandal King Gruerius who saw a crane (“grue” in French) flying across the evening sky and decided to build his town on that very spot… This is why the coat of arms of Gruyeres depicts a crane on a red background. Gruyeres Castle and the small town of Gruyeres provides countless opportunities for outstanding photos!
In addition Gruyeres Castle, Gruyeres town provides ample opportunities to experience the legendary specialities of the Fribourg Pre-Alps, such as fondues and dishes from the Bénichon menu. Gruyeres Switzerland is also home to The Fondue Academy, visitors have an opportunity to gain an insight into the art of fondue preparation by master cheesemakers, and for all us chocolate lovers, this is the time and place to participate in a Gruyeres workshop!
