Around 15 BC, the Roman military camp called Turicum was established around Zurich, Switzerland. This camp served as a strategic point that controlled many trading routes as well as protecting the Roman empire’s northern border. In today’s modern-day Zurich’s Lindenhof, there was an ancient Roman settlement that overlooks the entire city center – subsequently the settlement flourished as an important center of trade and commerce.
Today, evidence of the Roman presence in Zurich can still be seen and Lindenhof hill is a popular destination that offers a spectacular view of the city. When and if you visit this location, you can still visit the remains of a Roman bathhouse that were discovered in the area in the 19th century.
Another notable Roman site in Zurich is the remains of a Roman fort at Vindonissa, it’s located near Windisch which is about 30 kilometers west of Zurich. Like many Roman bases, Vindonissa was a key military point for the Roman empire that had a significant role in defending the empire’s northern border. The site includes the remains of a Roman amphitheater, the largest of its kind in Switzerland.
In addition to its military history, Zurich’s Roman legacy can be found in the city’s architecture and culture. Zurich’s Swiss National Museum contains an impressive collection of Roman artifacts, including weapons, pottery, and jewelry. Also, it’s notable to mentioned that many of Zurich’s streets and buildings are built on the foundations of the Roman settlement, and the city’s layout still reflects its Roman legacy.
This History of Swiss Chocolate
Globally, it’s without a doubt that Switzerland is renowned for its fine Swiss chocolate that is well-defined within the Swiss culture and traditions. Since the 17th century, when cocoa was first introduced to Europe by Spanish explorers who brought it back from their journeys to the Americas, the Swiss have been honing their legendary confectionery skills.
In fact, the first Swiss chocolate factory was established in 1819 by François-Louis Cailler, who began producing chocolate in his family’s mill in Vevey. Subsequently from 1826 onwards, Philippe Suchard opened a chocolate factory in Serrières, that later inspired David Sprüngli-Schwarz and his son Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann to found their Zurich confectionery shop in the 1830s, which was the birthing of the famed chocolate company Lindt & Sprüngli.
It’s well known that from the 19th century, Swiss chocolate gained international recognition when many Swiss chocolatiers began to experiment with new techniques and flavors. In 1875, Daniel Peter, a Swiss chocolatier, invented milk chocolate by adding condensed milk to the chocolate recipe. This remarkable innovation, for his time, led to a boom in the Swiss chocolate industry and helped establish Switzerland’s reputation as a chocolate capital of the world.
These early pioneers of Swiss chocolate, opened the door in the early 20th century for today’s famed Tobler, Frey, and Nestlé that also became household names, with their signature chocolate brands becoming synonymous with Swiss quality and craftsmanship. Even though chocolate is now a global industry with factories around the world, Switzerland still remains one of the world’s leading producers of high-quality chocolate, and Swiss chocolate remains one of the world most sought after exports around the world.
Historically, the Swiss chocolate industry has established itself with its long tradition of innovation and creativity, with its famed chocolatiers who constantly innovate and explore the boundaries of chocolate. Like many things that are Swiss e.g., Rolex, Swatch, etc., Swiss chocolate is made using only the finest ingredients – hence its smooth texture, creamy taste, and rich aroma.
